NEIGHBORHOODS CELEBRATING BIG!

The following neighborhoods have described large celebrations. They indeed will stand out above all other neighborhoods.

The Arrowhead/Carolanne Farms area of Kempsville will be offering comfort stations throughout the neighborhoods. The main street of Susquehanna will be growing its diplay. Pods throughout the neighborhood will be brightly lit. You'll find a very special area on the corner of Coventry and Sir Barton. It's always a wonderful stop. Neighbors come to warm up at the fire, listen to holiday music, nibble on some ookies, and sip cocoa. There is always goodies one expects at a holiday event... This area of the neighborhood completely encapsulates what this event is all about - friends, neighbors and children coming together to create magic and memories that will last a lifetime.

Baycliff will be lit from one end to another. Volunteers will be going door-to-door carolling up and down Baycliff Drive. They have a jump on the rest of us. Baycliff started their luminary event a few years before SYLNight was brought to life and because of that, I believe they have the highest number of homes participating than anywhere in the city. In fact, they changed their traditional luminary date to join the SYLNight because they knew first-hand the beauty and the many benefits of having neighbors unite in the spirit of the Holidays.

The Charlestown Woods area will have Santa with hayriding carollers sharing the beauty of song and mounted police officers with their beautiful horses to add to the festivities! They are also offering two large "Celebration Stations" where passerbys can sip cocoa and nibble on some cookies. They will meander through their neighborhood making sure to visit areas that are brightly lit. They will have nearly 1700 luminaries aglow. I believe they will have many different paths to follow.

Homestead area of Kempsville is also announcing how special life can be when neighbors unite. Residents have shared some of their plans... tailgating, lawn and driveway gatherings, walking the neighborhood, and pulling a wagon with hot, homemade chili to share. What a wonderful neighborhood!

Do you wish you lived in a neighborhood like those mentioned above? Did you know you could have it fairly easily. Take action now and contact Illuminate A Cause, LLC to discuss plans for next year! Make your neighborhood just as special as those highlighted above. Talk to three of your neighbors. Go to the store and purchase some white bags, sand and battery operated tea lights. Start your own tradition! Organize your neighborhood one group of neighbors at a time. You can do it!

Create magic, create memories, create relationships!

More neighborhoods participating

Look at the growing list!

Although every citizen has been invited to participate in SYLNight and one may never know how many citizens in which neighborhood are informally participating, listed below are the neighborhoods joining this year.

  1. Arrowhead
  2. Baycliff
  3. Bellamy Plantation
  4. Bellwood Estates
  5. Bellwood Meadows
  6. Carolanne Farms
  7. Carolanne Point
  8. Charlestowne*
  9. Charlestowne East*
  10. Charlestowne Lakes*
  11. Charlestowne Woods*
  12. Fairfield
  13. Homestead
  14. Huntington
  15. Huntington Estates
  16. Level Green and surrounding areas*

Calling ALL Leagues and Realtors

League and Home Owner Association Leaders;
Realtors selling any home in Va. Beach - a partnership will help everyone!

LEAGUES/COMMUNITY GROUPS:
This is a time to set your neighborhood, and the homes for sale within it, above all others to get homes sold and keep your home sale prices up! Neighborhoods that participate in the warming event, Share Your Light Night can be a deal maker and help maintain home prices because it may give you a one-up on the competition. Another option is for Civic Leagues is to offer a previous copy of your newsletter for the potential new home owner. This will strengthen your civic league by being a tool to recruit future members or volunteers.

It is known that neighborhoods that are organized have more appeal than those that do not. When selling in the winter, if neighbors know there is a way to instantly meet other neighbors through this wonderful event, it will give potential buyers something to look forward to... an opportunity to picture the wonderful life everyone dreams of...

REALTORS:
If there is a home for sale in any particular neighborhood within Va. Beach in November or December, let perspective home buyers learn about Share Your Light Night by offering them information about SYLNight - displayed luminaries and a handout waiting on them for whomever will purchase. Also, if not sold before December 13th, Realtors should consider holding a mini-luminary event in December through setting up an open house to finalize the deal. Have your home and on both homes on either side, as well as the three across the street display luminaries. You will instantly set the stage that their home, that they buy will possibly be their home for a lifetime... just as Virginia Beach is a city for a lifetime.

If a potential buyer is considering your Va. Beach home vs. a home in Norfolk or Chesapeake, this could be the cherry-on-top that you and your potential buyers are looking for to close the deal.

NATIONWIDE REACH - Remembering and reestablishing the bond shared by most citizens soon after 9-11

Illuminate A Cause, LLC is looking to connect with other communities nationwide. IAC has written other citizens that display luminaries and asked them to join SYLNight this December and help us grow this event nationally.

Email us or call to let us know you will be participating in Share Your Light Night (SYLNight) this year so we can add you to the growing list.

As you know, this event is held to unite neighbors, those that are near and those that are far. We started on the neighborhood level, brought it citywide and it now has spread to others areas of our region. Now it is time to spread it nationwide.

It is the goal of SYLNight to empower citizens and create camaraderie between neighbors. This will encourage stewardship of our communities nationwide. Through this event, we hope to create close-knit neighborhoods where we all look out for one another - just as we did soon after 9-11.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

How strongly do you SUPPORT (or not) the right for leagues, homeowner associations, volunteer not-for-profits and other groups to be able to advertise (meetings, events, etc.) through the use of temporary, portable, or stake-type signage without worry of having our group signs removed from the streets or banned altogether?

We want to hear from you. Please take less than one minute and have your voice heard. Click here to have your thoughts and feelings heard.

Other National Neighbors Uniting for the common CAUSE

The messages these neighbors share with their fellow students encapsulates exactly what it is that SYLNight wants to do in all of our neighborhoods. Please help our neighbors help themselves by simply talking and developing relationships with one another. When citizens unite and build camaraderie, they become empowered. Empowered people are the ones that make real differences in our world and become good stewards of our surroundings.

As you enjoy the video, please consider helping this initiative in what ever ways or means you have available, either offering financial support or open this up with your network. This is important and has proven to be life changing.

Enjoy.

NEIGHBORHOOD INSTITUTE is Phenomenal!

Click the title of this entry to see what it is I'm talking about. Our City of Virginia Beach, more specifically the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation, offers this class each year and has done so for some 15 years.

Read more about what the Neighborhood Institute offers from an archeived article written on May 16th, 1996 from the Virginian-Pilot. Click on this link to read the article: http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/VA-news/VA-Pilot/issues/1996/vp960516/05160397.htm

This is a must-take almost free course ($35) which is offered once yearly. It is my inspiration to bring this to you all more often than that in some form or fashion. Next year, be sure to sign up for this class where ever it is offered.

Lisa Barrett, The Country Singer and I are connected by chance

Please turn on your speakers and open your heart. Listen to the message in this song.

This artist and I found each other by chance. Early this year, her husband was surfing online and found our SYLNight website.

We both, like all people, have the same goal to live a happy life. This is what it's all about and I hope we, as a community, can further this tradition to unite through luminaries putting aside all differences. I am inspired for this event will give us all something to look forward to year after year.

20080513

WE'RE LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS

As some of you may have read, ordering in mass quantities takes forethought and months of planning. Therefore, if you are considering partipating, please take the steps now and talk with your neighbors, league, Pastor, or employer/employees. We need you to share the number of luminaries you believe your neighbors will want, so we can insure we have them for you.

We have pledged to purchase 5,000 luminaries from distributor. This is almost the same amount we had purchased last year. Each luminary consists of one of each item; standard white bag, Lumabase, and ultra bright LED light.

Please fill out the pledge form below and let us know how many luminaries you'd like to pledge.

EARTH DAY was a wonderful success

Sharing the message of SYLNight was very warmly received. Not only did we speak to individuals wanting to get their neighborhood groups (civic leagues/HOAs) involved in the luminary event this December, but there were many that had no representation in their neighborhood and will be working to organize and help nurture this event to unite their neighbors.

Soon, we will be listing the RAFFLE WINNERS from today's event. There will be three lucky winners. One will win the very first SYLNight t-shirt with IAC, CCO and First Atlantic Restoration's logo depicting neighbors walking and building camaraderie with other neighbors. The second winner will receive a tote-bag with the same photo and logos. And the THIRD winner will receive 20 free luminaries (bases, LED tea lights, bags) for their home this December.

Please, share this message with everyone on your email list. This event, although blooming in Va. Beach has and will continue to grow outside our boarders. This event is for EVERYONE!

To all that I spoke with today, thank you for sharing all of the words of encouragement and for pledging not only to participate, but to help network for this cause to unite. It is greatly appreciated.

DO YOU HAVE A MAGNETIC PERSONALITY?

We, Illuminate A Cause, are looking for neighbors that seem to draw their fellow neighbors in. Have you hosted neighborhood gatherings such as summer cookouts, block parties, oyster roasts, bunko groups, or offered an invitation to the guys in the neighborhood to come over to watch the game or race? Are you a mother who has organized babysitting co-ops or have a home where neighborhood children tend to gravitate to? Do you live in a neighborhood where the guys or gals get together to make improvements in each others' homes, such as holding painting parties, drywall days, or tree trimming.

We know you're out there and we want to hear your story. Please, contact Illuminate A Cause to see if you would be willing to open your circle just a little wider. We want to celebrate those that unite their fellow neighobors.

WE ARE LIGHTING THE WAY

SYLNight 2007 – Carolanne Farms

(Article taken from VB
CCO's Newsletter)

Participating leagues from December’s event held a very fruitful Share Your Light Night (SYLNight) planning meeting January 18th. As this city-wide illumination was our first season, we learned a great deal from our successes, evaluated areas where we can improve, and cultivated a plan to further our success. We’re excited, energized and looking forward to sharing our light with others for many years to come.

Join these leagues now so next year’s event will be bigger, brighter and even more beautifully spirited. With early commitments, we will be able to more accurately estimate the number of luminaries needed and insure the availability of the safest and brightest products available at the best price (nearly wholesale) from a not-for-profit organization, Illuminate A Cause. Over the next few months, we will be gathering samples to share with interested groups. To allow enough time for overseas shipping, we will start collecting pledge orders in September. Let us know soon if you have interest in either helping plan the event or to pledge some level of participation in illuminating your neighborhood. If we reach the goal and fill a cargo container, the shipment will arrive directly into port here in Hampton Roads.

Many leagues will be lighting their neighborhood’s entrance with SYLNight luminaries, as well as offering order forms to their neighbors so they can obtain these reusable luminaries to display along their yard’s edge to continue the ribbon of light throughout our City.

Every Beach citizen, no matter if they have an active civic league or not, is encouraged to participate. Remember, this is a city-wide tradition held by its citizens and will become one of our City’s signatures during the winter.

I believe in the value of having organized neighborhoods. This event offers the ideal environment to grow civic leagues, whether acting as moisture to revive the wilting or be the seedlings planted in fertile soil. Today, pledge to discuss this event with your Board of Directors or with your Garden Club. This event will bed in another stepping stone on the path of true citizenship. With your help, this uniting and empowering event will eventually touch the lives of every single citizen of this City, both young and old.

To get the word out, consider bookmarking the site and perhaps share the link with those on your email contact lists. We’d appreciate it greatly.

Together, we will unite our City. Will your group unite with this cause? For more information, email the event coordinator at shareyourlightnight@yahoo.com or call 714-2772.

the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments
that take our breathe away.”

WE'RE IN AWESOME COMPANY

Those 2007 participating leagues met tonight. You all can look towards next year as we promise next year's event will be bigger, brighter and offer much more spirit. We've only just begun.

We've bounced around many new ideas and with all of us gathering, the opportunity to "cherry pick" was ideal. We can't be more excited.

Check back and check back often. We're continually working towards a brighter SYLNight and with each coming year, this event will touch more lives and make a real difference in our communities. The reach of this event will eventually touch the lives of every single citizen of this City, both young and old.

Thanks for visiting and feel free to leave your comments. We'd love to hear from you.

Plans starting already

January 18th will be a big day. Representatives from each neighborhood who participated during the 2007 SYLNight will be meeting to brainstorm about next year's event. Be sure to check back to find out what we're working on. We're all excited.
